On January 9 the first CARE assessment team went to Kibera, one of the largest informal urban settlements in Africa and home to about 800,000 people, to evaluate damage of post election violence in Nairobi and identify the basic needs of those affected. What the CARE team found was a very different Kibera from what is normally considered a bustling and vibrant community.
"All the kiosks are burned down and few people are in the streets compared to the usual crowds that populate this area ofNairobi," sais Stehen Okello, project officer for CARE in Kibera. "There are also very few children outside. Women and children have fled to churches or safe heavens in other parts of Nairobi. Since many people lost their livelihoods, they are forced to go out of Kibera to look for food and find a way to survive."
Residents of Kibera told the CARE team that their most pressing need is food. Though some agencies are already distributing it, ensuring that the most vulnerable get it is challenging as fighting often erupts and people who receive food aid are assaulted on the way home.
"It is critical to work with community leaders to ensure a smooth logistics of food aid otherwise women and child headed households may not receive the assistance they need," said Felix Okech, CARE program manager for the Dadaab refugee camps in North eastern Kenya and currently in Nairobi to assist with internally displaced people in the capital.
In addition to food aid, Kibera residents told CARE staff that they need access to safe water, rehabilitation of community latrines and key household items such as mosquito nets, blankets, kitchen utensils and plastic sheeting. The sooner these items are delivered, the more lives will be saved and residents will have a chance to return to their communities and start rebuilding their lives. For the time being however, security remains a concern as residents are afraid of attacks in the middle of the night.
Slowly, and with the help of aid agencies like CARE, life in the Kibera slum may eventually return to normal.

Song for Africa is building a primary school in the Masai Mara with Free the Children.
This will help in giving another 100 children minimum a chance to have an education.
A note from the CEO regarding the school program:
The school we are building usurps the Gov't and is done with the local community.
The more schools that are built in the area, the more kids show up and the cyclic
need for more schools continues. It is also wonderful to see first hand children
arriving three hours early everyday to class eager to learn and stay on the weekends.
This is because Kenya has it's first non-corrupt Gov't in 28 years and primary school
is now free, but they need structure. The deal that is in place will see the local
community take over the upkeep of the facility after one year so we are essentially
giving them a leg up and not a hand out. In the new world of development, this model
has proven to be quite successful.
